A SHOCKING graphic has shown the number of deaths across the UK not associated with the coronavirus pandemic has spiked alongside the growing COVID-19 death toll.

The shocking chart compared the average death rate across the UK on a weekly base with the growing number of deaths during the  outbreak. The data has shown the number of non-COVID-19 related deaths has exponentially increased alongside the loss of life the pandemic has caused. Discussing the graphic, BBC Newsnight correspondent James Clayton said: "The pink line on this graph shows how many people die, on average, each week of the year.

"The blue line is 2020’s figures but just look at what happened in the week running up to April 3. An extra 6,000 people died in England and Wales.

"Of those 6,082 extra deaths, 3,475 mentioned COVID while 2,607 didn’t.

"One possibility is that COVID deaths are simply being missed."

Statistician David Spiegelhalter admitted to feeling "moved" when he saw the increasing death toll, as he suggested the increase in the number of non-coronavirus related deaths may be the result of little testing on people who died without being diagnosed with COVID-19.

Mr Spiegelhalter said: "When it came up with this huge spike, I was personally very upset.

"I don’t think I’ve ever been quite as moved and shocked at data being portrayed before. And I’m a statistician, I look at data all the time."

He continued: "The big question is why would deaths go up which are not labelled as COVID.

"And the first thing I think people would come to is that, maybe, these are associated with COVID.

"At the moment, the Office of National Statistics reports that less than 10 percent of COVID deaths are out of hospital - in care homes or at home or in hospices.

"Maybe that figure is a lot bigger but doctors have been not putting COVID on the death certificate because the patient was not tested."

At the moment, the Government has been reserving coronavirus tests to cover seriously ill patients. After much criticism, testing was also extended to NHS staff and other social carers who are most at risk because of the close contact they keep with their patients.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock pledged 100,000 tests will be delivered by the end of April but doubts have been cast on the ability of the Government to have such a high number of tests carried out.
